Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these medications must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and you become ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
